Jamaica Me Crazy!

Beef Teriyaki Stir Fry w/White Rice – 618 cal.

So, my Love and I have decided to go to Jamaica for our first trip.  Passports are on the way!

We have approximately two months before we leave, and my Love has decided that he wants us to try to shed a few pounds between now and then.  Urg.

After much debate, I decided that I didn’t want to go on some diet where I couldn’t have something I wanted, so I decided that we’d just do the eat healthier thing and count calories in addition to working out.  We joined a gym yesterday, which we will go to on the days he doesn’t work.  On the days like today which he works, he walks a bajillion miles (okay, I may be exaggerating, slightly) and I will walk around the neighborhood.

I’ve been having a lot of trouble spreading my calories out through the day like I’m supposed to.  There’s this little voice in my head that keeps whispering ‘Don’t eat that now… it’s early, what if you’re hungry later and have already eaten up all your calories for the day?‘  It’s not that I have a problem with being hungry, I usually feel hungry several times a day when I’m counting calories, it’s just that I want the option to be there to be able to eat more if I am still hungry.  If I haven’t left enough of a ‘calorie-cushion’, I can’t do that.

In addition, I’m of the southern, home-style cooking type.  I grew up eating huge portions of greasy, fried foods, potatoes with every meal, and super-sweet tea to wash it all down with.  And I’m good at it, too.  I am completely clueless how to eat and cook healthy.

Forgoing the tea wasn’t that hard.  I just force myself to drink water instead.  Unpalatable, but easily done.  Food, on the other hand, is proving to be a nasty beast.

I did have this salad for lunch today (this is an oversize bowl, the outside edges are about as big as the center of a dinner plate), with Lite Italian Dressing, Feta cheese, red onion, tomato, cukes, mushrooms, scallions, iceberg lettuce & green leaf lettuce for a total of 97 calories:

Italian Dressing & Feta cheese give it a boost of flavor. 97 cal.

Italian Dressing & Feta cheese give it a boost of flavor. 97 cal.

I’ve been sticking with an omelet for breakfast with two eggs, onion, green peppers & mushrooms topped with shredded cheddar and salsa.

The top photo was the dinner we’ve had for the past two nights.  It was about double the size I should eat, but I had to eat the whole thing, because I needed to make sure that I consumed enough calories.   It’s Beef Teriyaki stir fry with white rice.  That ginormous portion only came out to 618 calories, believe it or not.

Tonight, I’ll be having another salad, and a cheeseburger (homemade), and my Love will be having the stir fry again, except instead of beef, it will be chicken.  If I remember to take them and have time to post tomorrow, I’ll be posting photos of our dinner, along with the calorie count of each.

If anyone thinks something I post looks tasty, feel free to message me and ask for the recipe.  Since I have to weigh everything I put into the dish, the recipe will be in grams for the most part, so you will need a kitchen scale to follow it and get the same calorie count.  If you don’t give a hoot about calories, then you can just put however much you want of whatever I’m using in it as you like, and it will taste just as good!

Here’s to me learning to cook and eat healthier, and a thinner me (hopefully) in Jamaica!

Hello My Beautiful Wife, I commend you for your new found enthusiasm for living a healthier lifestyle. As someone who is also on the same journey I thought I would lend you some support and advice as I have lost 4 dress sizes and nearly 5 stone (70 pounds) since November of last year.
You mention having trouble with spreading the calories out. Well a woman is supposed to have 2000 a day, I take 200 off, so I eat 1800 which is quite a lot if your eating a lot of fruits and vegetables. I keep a selection of healthy snacks, not just one type in the house that I know I can have much as I want of without counting the calories like rice cakes, popcorn, pretzels, carrot slices, etc……..so I didn’t sick of eating the same thing every day.
If I want to have a treat like a couple of pieces of chocolate or a piece of cake I have less for lunch, or dinner.
I switched all my pastas to wholemeal pasta. I will have something like chopped up tiny pieces of broccoli and tomatoes into chicken and wholemeal pasta with low fat pasta sauce seasoned with garlic.
I drink a glass of water before every meal so I’m fuller faster.
I never deny myself a piece of anything. When you deny yourself the good stuff you start to crave it. It’s better to have a small amount of something naughty than deny yourself because it will make you sneak it and scoff more than you would having a controlled portion.
If you over exercise you’ll build up muscle, once you’ve lost weight and you settle in to eating a normal healthy lifestyle your muscles will start to loosen again and make you sag because they’ve been used to you working out etc…so make sure you keep the exercise to controlled normal things like walking on a treadmill, leg lifts etc…because these are things we do naturally. Keep moving even when your sitting still. When I’m doing dishes I do lunges, when watching TV I hold tin cans and do arm lifts, even in the shower I will stand with my hands on my hips and twist at the hips moving my hands to the next hip. When I’m in bed I till my pelvis up and down and clench my stomach and glutes.
I take a bottle of water with me everywhere I go, after I’ve eaten I take sips of water, it keeps you fuller for longer and keeps you hydrated and detoxes your kidneys.
Please……….keep away from the Artificial Sweetener. Your a smart girl, so I know you won’t.
    Low Fat, High Fiber.
And every if you want to burn fat faster of course, 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar (raw and preferably with Mother in it) in a glass of water before every meal (add it to the water you drink before you eat). The one I have is called Ostler, it smells like rotten apples but it just tastes like vinegar without the sharp tang.
It burns fat faster than anything on the planet. It is a great clean out of your organs, it keeps urinary tracts infections at bay because of it, it whitens your teeth, gets rid of fluid retention, lowers your sugar levels and cholesterol,, gets rid of dandruff, fleas, whitens your clothes lol it’s incredible stuff lol Without it I would of only lost half of what I have. It does actually work. Look it up lol
Try and used half fat versions of things, and if fresh fruit and veg is too expensive, canned and frozen is just as good.

I hit send before I was meant to lol Sorry, yeah eat fruit as much as you want. I do stuff like make a huge bowl of fruit salad, apple, grapes, pineapple, watermelon etc….and help myself to that through the week. Sometimes on my cereal, sometimes on it’s own, sometimes with non fat yoghurt. You don’t have much to lose like me but you’ll start to notice a difference after 2 weeks and the highs and butt you’ll get from squats and bum/tummy crunches will make them your best friend. My legs are looking amazing. Go as low to the ground as you can without your knee touching the floor once you’ve got the hang of it. I can sit like that for 3-4 minutes now.. And we also swim now too.

      Thank you, Wifey!
I will most likely try that Apple Cider Vinegar because I’ve seen you praise it on FB, and you’re not the only person who I’ve heard extoll it’s virtues. My aunt swears by it as well.
I have more weight to lose than you’d think. I carry my weight like a second skin, a layer of fat somewhat evenly distributed all over my body EXCEPT my belly. I can literally pass for 7 – 8 months preggers if I don’t suck in my belly & am wearing the right (wrong) top! It’s genetic, so there’s nothing I can do about where I carry my extra weight, except be sure I don’t carry any.
I’ve had the belly since high school, unfortunately.
I can’t do lunges, because of my knees. They’re terrible.
My favorite exercise is the treadmill. You would not BELIEVE how much you can tone your waist/butt/thighs/calves from simply increasing the incline! I usually set the treadmill to about 2.5 mph (about 4kph <- I googled that for your easy reference, LOL) then start increasing the incline. Once I've reached max incline, if I've still able to keep up, I start bumping up the speed until it actually feels like work, then keep steady until it's a struggle, then begin slowly slowing down/lowering incline, until I'm back to 2.5mph with 0% incline, then slow to about 1.5 mph for a few minutes of cool-down.
You do know that as your weight goes down, the calories you are supposed to consume per day lowers as well, right? lol. You should probably re-check your daily recommendations at your new, svelter weight.
Oh, and pretzels… more calories than you think. Be careful with those!
Definitely putting the vinegar on the list, though!
(PS – for a woman of my height and weight, trying to lost 2 lbs/wk, my daily recommended calories is between 1200 – 1500 cal/day)

yeah, but 90 calories is almost 1/12 of my calories for the day, lol… so that’s a lot to me!

lol, no, I stay around 1200 cals a day right now, but I try to vary it up above that some days, so I’m not stuck in a rut or anything. I’m rarely hungry, even on 1200 cals.

Yeah! Excited for you. Something to look fwd to. I look fwd to the pix. =)
A heads-up: it’s good to vary (rotate) the diet. Diff foods build diff tissue. And eggs and cheese are two animals (chkn and cow). Hard on the liver to have to process at the same time. Egg whites very hard on the liver.

I think you’ll find the How to Eat page useful. =)

Thank you very much for that 🙂 I have since stopped putting cheese on my eggs… although I now eat 1/2 mini bagel with my eggs, and put cream cheese on that ^_^
